Monastery of San Pedro de Villanueva (12th to 18th centuries): View PDF
Tradition has it that King Alfonso I 'The Catholic' constructed this building on 21 February 746, and the excavations carried out at the start of the refurbishing work to turn it into a Parador de Turismo confirm this idea. The current monastery was founded on this site and run by the Order of San Benito until the Desamortización de 1835 (Large-scale selling of State and Church assets). Two rooms with archeological remains, pottery in particular, uncovered during the refurbishing work are testament to this distant past. The monastery was declared a National Monument in 1907, and features an added wing of architectural and constructional qualities: truly a jewel set on the green banks of the River Sella, in whose waters the hotel is reflected. In the background, guests can contemplate the majestic landscape of the Picos de Europa. This Parador, featuring comfortable and modern facilities, is the ideal starting point from which to discover the delights of the Asturian landscape, enjoy its typical festivals and ancestral folklore activities and sample the best and most authentic of its gastronomic tradition. In addition to standard double rooms with either queensize bed or two beds, there are special doubles, doubles with living room and superior doubles available. SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Minimum half board compulsory from 1 August to 16 September inclusive.

Our Feedback
Rating: Excellent “There could have been more food such as potatoes and vegetables, having a large appetite I could have eaten quite a bit more. I mentioned this to the Parador and they have noted my comments.” Rating: Excellent “We were in the modern, motel-like part, but it was very nice--especially the balcony overlooking the river. Beautiful Picos de Europa setting. Great local food in the dining room (fabadas). ” Rating: Excellent “Easily the best of all on this trip. Everything about this Parador is what we have come to expect. ” Rating: Excellent “This comment applies to all paradores. The quality of internet service was very uneven. Some places it just wasn't available. Some at slow speeds. Some shut down in the evening. At all paradores, breakfasts were very nice. Cangas de Onin was a limited buffet.” Rating: Excellent “(No Comment)” Rating: Excellent “(No Comment)” Rating: Excellent “Superb hotel in magnificent surroundings” Rating: Excellent “(No Comment)” Rating: Excellent “A relaxed and comfortable atmosphere with good food” Rating: Very Good “Liked: Location.
