Country House Draped with Ivy: View PDFThe Parador is currently closed for renovations.
The Parador de Villafranca del Bierzo (Leon) has now reopened after an extensive renovation. First settled in the early eleventh century, the town - which is on the Camino de Santiago - is the home of the Parador de Villafrance del Bierzo. Renovations took eighteen months and cost over seven million euros. The new design by architects Jose Ignacio and Eduardo Paradinas includes eco-friendly systems and facilities. Outside, a large terrace with wonderful views of the mountain has been built, as well as an additional twelve rooms (making the total fifty one). There are two new leisure areas including an outdoor pool for the summer and a heated indoor pool. A relaxation zone, complete with sauna, ice fountain and various thermal showers are now ready for guests use. The décor is a pleasing mix of modern style with a touch of nostalgia evidenced in important works of art. Timber from sustainable forests has been used throughout and energy-saving exterior finishes keep the building warm in winter and cool in summer. There is also a Waste Management Plan and energy efficient lighting systems. Stroll through the city and explore the Calle del Agua (which passes the Camino de Santiago) and enjoy the many historic buildings. The town itself has been declared a Historic Monument and the region is particularly pretty. The landscapes of the Ancares mountain range to the north complement the beauty of the Parador's garden. The restaurant has maintained the traditional cuisine, offering botillo with cabbage, cachelo-style potatoes and chorizo; Bierzo peppers; river trout and Spanish ham - and the red and white wines from Bierzo Denomination of Origin.
