In the heart of the Ribeira Sacra: View PDFThe Parador is currently closed until March 2010.
The Parador will be closed from 04/01/2010 to 17/02/2010. During this time, why not visit some of the other Parador hotels nearby: Santiago, Tui o Verín. The Parador is housed in the Santo Estevo de Rivas de Sil monastery, in Nogueira de Ramuín (Ourense). It is located in a region popularly know as the birthplace of the "afiladores y paraguerios" (knife sharpeners and umbrella holders) and is one of the towns in Ourense in which the topography and the confluence of the rivers Miño an Sil create spectacular spaces that are worth visiting. The Monastery is one of Galicia's oldest, founded in the 6th century a.c.e. The original construction is Romanesque, though does show Gothic tendencies. Worth nothing are its 18th century baroque facade, its monumental staircase and its three cloisters: "De la portería", "De la Cocina", and "De los Obispos". The latter is the only cloister in Galicia, together with the cathedral in Tui, whose original construction has been preserved intact. The Hotel has a total of 77 rooms distributed around three cloisters of different styles and periods. The rooms are particularly interesting as they are all different, some with impressive views over the landscape and the valleys of the river Sil. The Abad Franquila room at the Parador of Santo Estevo is the largest at the hotel and has the best views of El Sil Canyon. It is named alter Abad Franquila, the first Abbot at the Monastery of Santo Estevo which was founded by King Ordoño II in the 9th century. The unique room at this charming hotel is located in the highest part of the building, to the northeast corner, and has a living room, a large bathroom with jacuzzi and a 2x2 m. double bed in the bedroom. There are three windows facing El Sil Canyon and the Monastery forest. There is a two night special promotion in this room for approximately 276 euros per person per night including special breakfasts, dinner, cava in the room and other special touches. The Hotel has a restaurant with terrace by the chestnut forest, a café with terrace in the entrance cloister, lounges and beautiful gardens. The spa at this Parador is exceptional. In the Ribeira Sacra enjoy the pleasures of water and various therapeutic treatments to relax your mind and body.

Our Feedback
Rating: Not Given “This was an excellent and atmospheric parador. The monastery has been excellently and sympathetically converted for this purpose, combining modern with traditional elements expertly. We had a few suggestions for improvements : (a) there should be more maps for walkers at the hotel and more information about pathways. Hotel staff, though excellent in other ways, obviously knew nothing about the locality and the availability of walks. Staff should be trained more on the history of the monastery and the amenities in the vicinity (b) The coffee shop/breakfast room serves as a bar as well. There is therefore no dedicated bar at the parador where guests can easily mix, an omission which could be easily rectified by converting a lounge to this purpose (for example, the room at the north east corner of the parador overlooking the gorge).
