* 16th Century Monastery: View PDF
The San Marcos Monastery in Leon, whose construction began in the 16th century, replaced another 12th century monastery from the times of King Alfonso VI. Different artists immortalised a past in stone and wood making the hotel a living museum. Now a Parador, it continues its role as a place for visitors to rest as once it had for travelling pilgrims. There is a magnificent Cloister and Chapterhouse, regal halls, a library - and an annex constructed in the 20th century which houses most of the guestrooms now. There are suites located in the original building with views of the square. In addition to standard double rooms with either queen bed or two beds, the Parador also offers suites, junior suites, double with two beds and living room and double with kingsize bed and living room. The restaurant serves excellent regional cuisine paired with renowned D.O. Bierzo and C.O. Tierras de León wines.

You can spend hours just exploring this place and finding all kinds of surprises in nooks and crannies. Parts feel somewhat shabby/chic and would make a fitting Harry Potter setting! The cloister porches are wonderful. Our room was the smallest we had in Spain, but was clean, pretty, and appointed in the typical manner of paradors. Wonderful staff who helped us revise reservations with other paradors and hotels. We did have trouble finding this parador, but the free guarded covered parking lot was wonderful.

We were very tire on arrival but the hotel itself was luxurious and comfortable. We had a wonderful dinner, one of the best I had eaten on my trip to Spain. Breakfast is sumptious and well worth the price.

The meals were excellent.

Rather aggressive female receptionist, failing to be courteous on our arrival, but we spoke with the manager about this at the time. Thought the Hotel was rather like a railway station at times, so busy in the lobby. Would have liked a facility to receive and send Emails without producing my own laptop.

staff unhelpful on arrival rooms not ready despite being after 3.30pm and rooms misleading as at the back of the lovely building. City of Leon however was lovely.

The bathroom was extremely clean but the bedroom could have been dusted better - especially the lights and lamps - it was very obvious that they had been missed for quite a time.
