* Exceptional 18th Century Arabic Fortress: View PDF
The special location of the Parador on Santa Catalina Hill makes it a very popular and unusual place to stay. Not luxurious, but comfortable and fascinating, the location makes staying here a memorable experience. Attached to the castle of Santa Catalina, the Parador was built on the grounds in 1965 in the style of the castle. There are evocative 20 meter arches in the main public room and magnificent panoramic views over Jaen. The Arabs gave the town the name of Giyen, which means Route of the Caravans - once an important stop because of the many products from the area, including wine, oil, wax, honey and wheat. In more recent history, General de Gaulle spent time at this Parador while writing his memoirs. The rooms are living history (but, of course, with every modern convenience for a comfortable stay). There are six rooms with double bed and thirty one with twin beds. The restaurant serves exceptional regional food, including dishes with local asparagus in season, the famous olive oil and garlic that is locally grown, snails and chotto (baby goat). There is an outside dining area off the main dining room when the weather is good. We recommend dining at the Parador, not only for the good food, but it is inconvenient to drive back into the old town of Jaen (this is certainly a town where one can become easily lost). The outdoor swimming pool (open seasonally) and children's play area make this an ideal family location. Ideal times to visit this Parador are April, May, September and October as it can get very hot during the summer months. Awarded Fodor's Choice 2009. You can visit the attached Santa Catalina castle (but it can get crowded during weekends in the summer months) - save it for later in the day when the crowds have gone. Note that the Parador can be difficult to find if you use your SATNAV equipment - the route will take you through the old town and it is better to avoid this.

The parador was wonderful. The staff was most helpful and the dining room was excellent. We would love to stay in a parador in Spain again someday.

This was the most beautiful of the three; probably because I'm partial to castles.

We didn't realize it was outside of the city - and driving in town is insane. The actual town of Jaen is not all that pleasant, although the cathedral and churches and museums are wonderful.

Incredible setting. Beautiful interior spaces.
Didn't Like:
The pool was not in use which was a big problem as we came with two kids and had counted on it. The parador did have an alternative but it was much less convenient.

This is a grand parador with high ceilings and rampant arches. Everything was beautiful and also efficients. Certainly the biggest and best dinning room ever. Parking was a bonus.

The facilities of the hotel were excellent and the staff were helpful. The location was wonderful and the food at breakfast and dinner was impressive Perhaps more tourist information on the local area in the reception of the hotel would have been useful.

The best hotel of our trip. Our room had a sweeping view of the countryside and the atmosphere of staying in a former castle was very enjoyable. The only disappointment was that the pool wasn't open until mid-June. It was certainly hot enough to have it available to guests by at least June 1.

Public rooms, bedroom, large pool, restaurant and service all highly recommended. Location a little out of central Jaen.

With it's extraordinary staff, stunning views, and romantic rooms, the Parador de Jaen is tremendously hospitable. The only negative is that smoking is permitted in the eating areas and, on a Friday night, the air becomes toxic for non-smokers. The manager permitted us to be served in a common area with a vaulted ceiling and massive fireplace, so we lost none of the medieval atmosphere. This is indeed, a fairy tale castle

The position of the hotel which included a terrace and a lovely view.

Unfortunately, not your fault as it was being renovated but no breakfast on the terrace. Also, NO POOL. Didn't look like it was being repaired either.

Hotel was very noisy in the morning ... sounded as if cleaning staff were moving furniture around. If they need to move furniture while cleaning they should wait until at least late morning, since people are vacationing and may want to sleep in.

We loved the Hotel, fantastic room, very atmospheric, excellent breakfast! Staff friendly and helpful although we did not eat much dinner(-v.salty- no indication on menu of this) and the waiter had trouble understanding our problem -no compensation although we didn't make a fuss.

Spectacular site; great staff. With temperatures at 41*C, though, it was a shame the swimming pool was closed

The facilities are excellent, but the dining room service could have been better. I think much of this difficulty may be attributed to the distances the staff had to carry the food and they did not put covers on the dishes, so the food was colder than it should have been

Liked:
The view from the castle at night over the town. The different olive oils to taste. Rooms and bathrooms were fine.
Didn't Like:
The smell of the olive industry all around- rather like pigs! Nowhere to go and find out how olive oil is made. There should be a demonstration/ tour somewhere nearby.
Rating: Good
Rooms had a slight unpleasant odor. View was excellent. Otherwise, had the atmosphere we expected from a Parador.

The maid walked into our room without knocking while my wife was naked. When we told the front desk reception about the incident, their only response was "okay"

room had ants, and the food is the parador was terrible.
Rating: Poor
See comment on website. We booked a room not realising that it had no views or balcony. On arrival it was bought to our attention that it was a 'basic' room and we could not upgrade as it was fully booked.
Rating: Poor
The accommodation was lovely and the location superb. However, the meal was appalling and this was an issue which was dealt with satisfactorily by the hotel at the time. This has however, affected our anticipated enjoyment of bookin another parador, as in previous visits we have had superb food. Thank you for your request for feedback.
