* 10th century castle situated on the Bidasioa Estuary : View PDF
The Parador occupies a beautiful castle built by the King of Navarre, Sancho Abarca, in the 10th century. The building still retains the appearance and atmosphere of an original medieval fortress and provides a magnificent backdrop to the coastal location. The thick-walled exterior of the fortress belies its beautifully renovated interior. The stonework in the courtyard is exquisite and the seaviews from the terrace (and some of the guestrooms) are stunning. There are magical arches, coffering, wrought iron, suits of armour and medieval decor throughout the Parador. In addition to double rooms with either two beds or a queen bed, there are superior rooms (2 beds), suites and a double with canopied kingsize bed. A very special room is The Reina Maria Cristina, a suite with a 2x2 metre four poster bed. The large stone vault lends the room a touch of majesty which, added to the stunning views out over Hondarribia and the River Bidasoa basin enjoyed from the window, will make your stay unforgettable. It has a cosy living room on an upper floor, providing peace and quiet. Famous figures such as Admiral Oquendo, the Duke of Alba, Garcilarso de la Vega, the Marquess of Spínola, Sofía Loren and Natalia Figueroa have stayed in this special room. Note: This Parador does not have a restaurant - only breakfast is served - no other meals, but there are many restaurants in the vicinity. One guest who stayed at the Parador recommends eating at Sebastian close to the Parador for great food and service.

The building was fabulous and we loved the location.

We found the breakfasts at the private hotels to be better than those of the Paradors. The staff could have been warmer.

Excellent staff and awesome Medieval palace. We had a huge corner room with views of the harbour from all windows, including the bathroom (a benefit of booking so early). The only information we could have used beforehand was the locked parking lot which is at the bottom of steep steps--not easy to maneuver luggage. We had a bonus of a Medieval Festival during our stay!

The Parador is beautiful and historic and the views, including from my window and balcony, were breathtaking. The staff was extremely helpful. I loved my stay.
Didn't Like:
Getting in and out of the parking lot was extremely difficult, but I doubt that can be changed.

The view outstanding. The staff fabulous, helpful, courteous. The parking atrocious. The stairs from the parking lot to the Parador horribly hard. The bathroom had a bad smell.

It was an experience to stay in a parador. The buiding was incredible and the views stunning. but the bedrooms could have been anywhere. but were most comforatble and gave me a taste of how the other half live! it did not make me feel that I had to do it again. as I say we went camping in the Spanish pyrennes and they were stunning and the facities as good! but the breakfast at the parador was great! We have said that we would try another one again for a night to add to our experieces! Thanks.

The staff at reception were not very helpful in giving recommendations for various tourist needs, like points of interest for sight-seeing or restaurants.

the absence of male staff to carry luggage up from the car park should be addressed.it should be possible to load and unload a car at the front of the building, before taking it down to the car park

too many tourists around; a little too much touristic

Breakfast was good. Again, TWIN beds not a plus for couples and shouldn't cost more should cost less because you're not having to change two beds.

Location and public rooms very, very pleasant. Staff very accommodating.
Didn't Like:
The parking and access to the parador are problematic. Having to carry suitcases up the stairs from the parking is an issue. Standard room facing into the courtyard is very dark, and for the price one would expect better.

Interesting common areas and beautiful view from hotel balcony. (View of stone wall from room)
Didn't Like:
Room was very poor, across the hall from noisy kitchen that woke us early every morning. Staff was friendly but not very helpful in suggesting places to dine or getting around town.

We loved the location and the building. The housekeeping lady was wonderful, charming, pleasant and efficient. Additionally, the female evening bar attendant on our second night was very helpful, pleasant and tried hard to make us feel welcome. She saw us later and even said good night as she was leaving to go home.
Didn't Like:
Where do I start? The hotel staff made us feel like we were imposing and that our requests were unreasonable. For example, I ALWAYS ask that my mini-bar be emptied because I never use the items, and I like to use the refrigerator for my own purposes. The front desk staff said this was "highly unusual" and got huffy, but accommodated the request, but only after acting like he felt we were idiots. The breakfast experience was wholly disappointing. We had to seek out a staff member who was sitting in the back, had to repeatedly ask for basics, such as napkins (there were NONE on any of the tables either morning we were there), and again, we were made to feel as if we were imposing or interrupting someone's break. Finally, there are MULTIPLE levels of stairs in this property, including a SERIOUS hike up a long flight of stairs from the parking area to the main entrance, and even after you exit the Lift to the room floors, but there was NOT a soul around to help us with our luggage. I had been traveling for over two months on business and was very tired and travel weary, so having to "Schlepp" our luggage up MANY stairs was exhausting and a very unpleasant beginning to what I had thought would be magical. Our request for help with the luggage was met with a very cold, "No, there's no-one." There was no apology, no expression of regret, or explanation that she would have liked to, but couldn't leave the front desk. I would never recommend this property to anyone. It was severely overpriced for the location, the service and the overall experience. Additionally, the property charged for parking in their highly inaccessible and difficult-to-find parking lot, and then had no means of assisting to get your luggage up the long staircase in the pouring rain. On the flip-side, Avila Paradore did NOT charge for parking. Of our three-week vacation in Morocco and Spain, our stay at the Paradore Hondarribia was definitely the low point. If I had been in the US, I would have demanded my money back.

Towels/bed linens never changed during 3 day stay. staff unfriendly, never smiled, provided little assistance . made me and my wife feel unwelcome. why do you have such unhappy people working there (all female)
Rating: Poor
Access difficult, car parking most inconvenient, absence of dining room.

wonderful. the town and parador were fantastic. The room was a bit stuffy on the interior but still loved it. The food at breakfast was much better than expected. Really recommend it and already have!
