The Parador is in a spectacular location - a ninth century castle high on a hill overlooking the town of Cardona and beyond. There is a second century Minyona tower and an eleventh century church on the same site. With its panoramic views from the outer rooms, and intimate castle views from the inner rooms, and a very skilfull conversion of the part of the castle that is the Parador, it is a unique place to stay. Some bedrooms have the charm and romance of of four poster beds and the suites are exceptionally lovely. Two of the suites are actually more like junior suites (one large room with a separate sitting area). The Suite Real does has two separate rooms joined by an arch. The duplex rooms are ideal for small families. There is a bar, a casual cafeteria on the top floor with a lovely terrace, and a fine restaurant. There is also the possibility of having in-room massage, when reserved in advance. Wi-fi is available in some parts of the castle (receptions, and bar/cafe) and there is a computer in the reception area (pay per message). Moats, towers, walls and Gothic elements combine with a decoration in which comfort and Catalan-inspired medieval furniture predominate. In the dining room, Catalan cuisine offers a regional cuisine with local specialities such as forest mushrooms and a variety of sausages. In addition to standard double rooms with either two beds or one queen bed, there are also suites and split level rooms at this Parador. A minimum board arrangement of accommodation and breakfast is required. Weekends always have a 2 night minimum stay. There is a three night minimum stay at Easter and Christmas. Note that it is difficult to get public transport to Cardona: there is a train and a bus from Barcelona to Manresa and from there you need to take a taxi to Cardona, which takes about 30 minutes and the price is between 40 and 50E each way. Cardona is a small town and its main claim to fame is the very old salt mines just outside town (an interesting tour costs 9 euros pp). There is a very pleasant walk from the castle into the town (about an eight minute walk). Parking is in the grounds of the castle.

What a special place! We loved our stay here and are sure it will be one of the more memorable hotels we visit for a long time to come. The staff was wonderful and very professional. The restoration was done beautifully.
Rating: Excellent
my only complaint is that the hotel could not give me a receipt for the balance of payment because it was booked online. My credit card received the charge for the balance but I never received an itemized bill for the entire stay.

We had a wonderful stay, the staff were very helpful, and I loved it that I was chased through the halls of the ancient castle (well, that is, I dreamed I was being chased through the halls of the ancient castle!!!)

They did not have a good room when we arrived...they had the four poster bed but the window was ten feet off the floor. They were lovely and offered us another option of an absolutely wonderful duplex at a reasonable rate (with a twenty foot high huge window!!!) that was much lower than the rack rate for that room. THey showed us both rooms so we could make our choice and gave us a tour of the Parador to boot. WOnderful service, warm staff, English speaking. THis is a wonderful setting and very well maintained.

Food at the restaurant was uneven, but the service was friendly and helpful.

The rooms were lovely and the views extraordinary. The dinner was, unfortunately, a disappointment: poor service, mediocre entrees.

The Parador was beautiful and the views were lovely. Bedrooms comfortable and very nice. I thought the food could have been better and I got an upset stomach that caused us to have to cancel Madrid. The Parador was the only place we ate the day I got very sick.

The restaurant was very good and the room overlooked the cathedral ruins. The bathroom was modern and the bed very comfortable.
Didn't Like:
Internet access in the room was not available, only in the lobby by the front desk. I used it there and it worked well, but it was loud and there was no privacy when I was connected to the Internet in the lobby.

Our first experience of Paradors and certainly the most amazing building to start with. Lovely room. Having read reviews of Paradors, could not understand some criticisms of staff - found staff in all eight we stayed in to be extremely friendly and helpful.

Although dinner was disappointing on the first night - better food at the hotel in Cardona, and the rock concert in the village kept us awake! The receptionist was very helpful and the Parador as always was breathtaking.

The only problem we had is that my husband left his leather jacket in our room and we're having some trouble getting it returned to us. He called the Cardona parador and talked with Xavier who told him that they had found it and would ship it to us C.O.D. We have been home now for over a month and we have had no word from them even though my husband has repeatedly emailed them. How can we resolve this issue? It was particularly careless of my husband since the coat belongs to our son. Can you help us?

This will be an excellent place to stay once the construction is completed in the town.

This is what a Paradore should be like! Well done.

The parador is located in a picture perfect location just north of Barcelona. The dinner was just okay with not much selection other than fish. My meat was 'raw'/not cooked which may have caused me to contract a gastro-intestinal illness whilst in Spain. The kids menu was a good idea. The breakfast was excellent. The rooms clean and quiet. Would recommend to others - yes.

The exterior of the Parador is fabulous. But, there was absolutely no help checking in, and you have to lug your bags up a couple of steps just to get to the front desk. The food was not very good
