At an altitude of over 1000 metres above sea level and at the confluence of the rivers Valarties and Garona, this delightful Parador is is just seven kilometers from the Baquiera Beret ski resort. The Aran Valley has beautiful landscapes with its winter snowfalls, but it also offers superb hiking in the summer months. The Aiguestortes National Park includes trails that were once used by miners and smugglers from Porcingles to Pontaut following the course of the river Noguera Pallaresa to Montgarri. There are Romanesque churches in the pretty villages - and of course the Roman fountains and baths in Arties. There is a lively nightlife in Arties too. The history of this Parador is fascinating. At the end of the 18th century one Don Gaspar de Portola was Governor of California and he founded the cities of San Diego and Monterry. Don Gaspar had his summer residence in the village of Arties in a stone and slate manor house that today houses the Parador. A square Templar tower has been conserved from the original house. The grounds have been divided into three areas over which fifty seven rooms are spread: there are eight duplex suites in the old part of the building and two unique rooms which offer fantastic views over the mountains. Thirty eight twin and nine double rooms are also available. The Parador's style is in keeping with the local architecture. The bedrooms have sloped ceilings with dormer windows and exposed beams. All have full bathrooms, satellite television, telephone, mini bar and hairdryer. Facilities at the Parador include elevator, central heating and air conditioning, bar, free wi-fi internet access, shop, heated swimming pool, sauna, gymnasium, garden, children’s play area, garage and car park. The unique heated swimming pool is part indoors and part outdoors. The Parador also has numerous conference rooms including the outstanding Salón Chimenea. The cuisine at the restaurant is influenced by regional specialities such as olla aranesa (stew), trucha a la llosa (local trout dish), civet de jabalí (wild boar stew) and pescajus de Artíes (brandy flavoured pancakes).
