Castle of the order of Calatrava: View PDF

Built on a hilltop called the Cumbre de Cerro Pui-Pinos, this 12th-13th century castle-convent became the seat of the Order of Calatrava in 1179. Dominating the landscape of the Maestrazgo, it conserves the keep, the bell tower-sacristy and the part reconverted into an 18th c. Aragonese palace. Gothic walls, plateresque tomb and baroque façade are features and an interior with soft, red and green colours, decorated with Spanish wood furniture and beams. It has a wonderfully peaceful garden. A good number of trips and activities related to adventure sports can be organized from the Parador. Aragonese cuisine includes Alcañiz style eggs, 'ternasco asado' (roast young lamb) and typical sweets: Alma and almond tarts -- the kitchen under the guidance of Chef Gerardo Arobes Gutierrez. There are twelve air conditioned guestrooms, some with twin beds and others with queen beds, all with full private bathrooms. In addition, there are rooms with with two beds and balcony, Garret doubles, double with king size bed with canopy, special double rooms (larger) with two beds, and double (2 beds) with living room. A minimum board arrangement of accommodation and breakfast is required on weekends (Friday and Saturday).

“Even though the surrounding area was not too touristy, the castle itself was very interesting. Breakfast was great, and the accommodations were awesome! The gym could have been better with music or a tv and better equipment.”

“The room was lovely, howver the staff in the restaurants were poor. They did not in any fashion seem to care about their jobs or take any initiative. For example - myslef and 2 other guests had to ask 4 times for pan y tomato to be replaced in the morning before it wsa finally done. Then, once it was done, they did not bring more bread. The evning meal could've been a lot more enjoyable if the staff seemed to care about the guests, vs. answering their cellphones in the back. We were dissapointed with the experince, especially considering the price of the meal.”
