* Medieval arab fortress: View PDF
This castle from the 8th century is on the Júcar river, on a promontory in Manchego-Levantinas. The architecture of the Parador, which occupies the medieval castle of the Marquises of Villena, is the result of more than three centuries of history. Founded by the Muslims in the 8th century, it was captured by King Alfonso VIII in the 12th century. It was the home of writer Don Juan Manuel, and has been the scene of sieges and revolts in centuries past. Emphasis has been placed on maintaining the authenticity of the building, with oak wood and a mix of modern and classic styles that accentuate its medieval character. The use of reds and oranges contrast with the sobriety of the space, and provide an impressive background for a collection of paintings which echo pieces of famous works also found in Cuenca. Tapies, Redondela, Sempere, Amadeo Gabino, Alvaro Delgado, Martínez Novillo and Menchu Gal are just some of the painters whose work decorates the former Castle of the Marquises of Villena, a peaceful refuge on the Castilian plateau. Fourteen pleasant ensuite guestrooms are available, and there is a restaurant serving regional cuisine, under the guidance of chef Martín Alonso Castaño. In addition to double rooms with two beds, the Parador also offers double with king bed and canopy and junior suites. Breakfast is included in room price..

Breathtaking building, beautifully decorated, blending the original castle building with modern touches. Friendly, helpful staff. Vegetarian section in the menu - hard to find veggie options in Spain. Bedroom clean, spacious and comfortable.

BecAuse it is a castle, any views from rooms are sparse and little; otherwise, it was wonderful

Wow, what a fantastic place, what a setting. Such an impresive building and the modernisation was done extremley well. Room was lovely, all the extras were really good quality, very clean. Food and service were fantastic. Information about the area, castle and it's history would have be interesting. Lovely village, would have been quite happy to move and live there!

The hotel and its setting were amazing. The food and restaurant service was excellent. The room was well appointed and designed well. Overall we would love to stay there again.
Didn't Like:
The room had a few annoying small problems ie. the bathroom sink plugs were broken and a couple of light bulbs were not working in the room. For the price of the stay it would be very nice to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room also.

As you come around the bend in the road, the Parador looks amazing and the old town is full of character. Parking was easy and the reception staff really helpful.
Didn't Like:
I felt the Parador had been over modernised, with perspex balconies and I did not like the bathroom being part of the bedroom, ie no door. The toilet compartment was like a cupboard. Breakfast was awful with limited choice and waiter service, the one waiter on duty could not cope with the numbers of guests. We waited over half an hour just to see the breakfast menu and had to remind the waiter he had forgotten our eggs.
Rating: Good
half of my family got the great big suite which was EXCELLENT, but i was in another room which did not compare with the suite room at all.
