The Paradores
The Parador Group of Spain is a public corporation, but the single shareholder is the Spanish State and Patrimonio Nacional who run these unique buildings as hotels. Many are in spectacular castles, convents, palaces and monasteries, Arab fortresses - the sort of accommodation that would not normally be available to travelers.
Spain is full of extraordinary ancient buildings – castles, palaces, monasteries, manor houses – and as the buildings fell into disrepair something needed to be done to preserve this important architectural heritage. In 1928 an organization was formed with the intention of restoring and refurbishing these superb buildings and using them as hotels and restaurants. From the beginning, their reason-for-being was to provide good and reliable accommodation throughout the country for the tourist and business traveller.
Today there are ninety two Paradors throughout Spain – rarely more than a few hours apart. This is the perfect definition of touring – just a few hours leisurely drive exploring the countryside and each night knowing that your accommodation is in an exquisite building with a good restaurant , and a comfortable room – with full bathroom – and the latest communications technology so that you can keep in touch with family, friends and business associates. Choose a route in the countryside, along the coast, or in one of Spain’s important historic cities – whichever you choose, there will be a special room for you in a Parador at day’s end. The Parador group has also created suggested routes around historical, gastronomic or literary themes. The Rioja Wine Route – including the Paradors at Calahorra, Olite and Santo Domingo de la Calzada is one example. Or perhaps the Don Quixote route with nights at Oropesa, Siguenza, Albacete, Almagro and Manzanares.
The restaurants at the Paradors offer cuisine of the region using local produce. Dining in the Parador restaurants is an enjoyable experience, each Parador offering a menu that focuses on traditional dishes but prepared in a unique style. There is a set menu available as well as a la carte items and the winelists are extensive and comprehensive.
The Paradors are excellent value and there are frequent seasonal specials offered. If you are over 55 or between the ages of 20 and 35, two special-rate programs are available to you (depending on availability). Some Paradors also offer family rooms.
We highly recommend the Paradors for those who like to plan ahead, who want to be assured of very good accommodation in an interesting building – with no surprises about the quality or comfort of the room, who enjoy exploring the countryside and towns and who enjoy authentic regional cuisine. The service is friendly and welcoming (and there are always English-speaking staff to help you).
